Work Experience
Work experience is one of the highlights of transition year for many students. It offers a glimpse into the real world of work and can play an important role in career choice. It is vital that students put a lot of thought and effort into securing good work placements.
There are two work placements in transition year. The first one is for two weeks before the Christmas break. The second one is for two weeks before the Easter break. One placement should be career based and the other should be community/voluntary/charity based. Employers prefer that students do one 2 week work placement rather than two 1 week placements with different employers as it allows them to train the students and give them some time to settle into their role.
In the past we've had students work with the BBC, in the USA, in Italy and in areas as diverse as marine biology to sports commentating. The more effort that the student puts into securing a good work placement the greater the value of the experience.
